Description: A two-year MPhil programme delivered by the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), University of Ghana, under the World Bank Africa Centres of Excellence Project, in collaboration with the Seed Science Centre at Iowa State University, USA. The programme offers interdisciplinary training that emphasises superior problem-solving and analytical skills, combining current seed science and technology instruction with essential business management modules in a rigorous, integrated curriculum, to develop broadly trained individuals who can improve access to high-quality seeds. Students undertake nine months of coursework at the University of Ghana, followed by a three-month experiential attachment at a research institution or private seed company (locally or abroad) to develop seed technology skills, then complete thesis research in the second year. Areas of study include Seed Biology and Production, Biometry and Research Methods, Financial Management in the Seed Industry, Crop Improvement and Biotechnology, Micro Enterprise Development, Seed Health Management (Seed Pathology and Seed Entomology), Seed Drying/Processing/Storage, Seed Business Management, Seed Trade/Policy and Regulation, and Quality Assurance in the Seed Business.
Admission Requirements: A good first degree in crop science, agriculture, biological sciences or a related discipline (confirm specific requirements with WACCI).
