Plant Breeding (PhD)
Admission requirements
Description: A four-year PhD programme delivered by the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), structured in two stages: one year of academic study at the University of Ghana followed by three years of thesis research at the student's research station or university in their home country, returning to UG in the final six months to complete and submit the thesis. In the first year, students take special-topic courses and modules in plant breeding, genetics, biotechnology and related subjects — at least six core courses (18 credits) plus two electives (6 credits) — and must pass a comprehensive examination before beginning research. Students defend their thesis proposal in a seminar at the end of year one, present graded annual progress seminars (3 credits each in years 2–4), and complete a dissertation worth 48 credits. The research phase involves at least 30 months of supervised thesis work. Graduates are equipped to conduct original, publishable research in plant breeding and genetics, communicate research effectively, and set up and manage a plant breeding programme.
Admission Requirements: A good Master's degree in plant breeding, genetics, crop science or a related discipline.
